I think a huge part of this may be down to the newly added content but never once during Observer: System Redux did I feel like I needed a fast forward option. It is very rare for a game to have such strong story related replay ability, but this reincarnation of Observer showcased that brilliantly. The story this time out remains the same and even with another playthrough, Observer: System Redux felt fresh, like I had experienced it all again for the first time. Bloober Team must be commended for their dedication to fix the many gameplay hampering issues that existed with Observer, and Observer: System Redux greatly benefits from this dedication. Controls are far more responsive now too leading to fluid interaction and seemingly key items are purposely more visible when using Daniel’s vision filters which is always a positive. That’s not to say there aren’t any issues remaining from before but this time around, Bloober Team have fine-tuned what matters most. Stealth segments no longer feel like a chore to get through and gameplay hampering glitches and crashes are almost nonexistent. But thankfully, this time around, Bloober Team have addressed these issues with confident conviction. It was a frustration that almost ended the experience entirely. Numerous times throughout my original playthrough of Observer, I would become a hopeless victim of convoluted stealth segments and infuriating glitches or crashes. Gameplay and performance wise, Observer: System Redux is a different kind of beast to its predecessor. Every new scenario is interesting and visually impressive providing some serious eye candy that would even make David Lynch nod with approval. As a horror gamer, who wouldn’t want to experience that? Bloober Team realizes this and relishes every moment of it. With every use of The Dream Eater, we are thrust headfirst into nightmarish scenarios that exist solely to disorientate and disturb. Trippy visuals an d psychological puzzles have become a signature of Bloober Team in recent years and Observer: System Redux showcases why. Truthfully, investigation was Observer’s greatest strength and here it has only been amplified with some great new content too. The new side missions never outstay their welcome and one particular side mission was extremely impressive visually, evoking vibrant cinematic masterpieces like Suspiria. Investigation in Observer: System Redux is never dull and this time around Bloober Team have added several new optional side missions for good measure. Equipped with a device named The Dream Eater, Daniel has the ability to hack into civilian minds in an effort to piece this mystery together providing some deliciously surreal hallucinatory encounters as Daniel begins to lose his grip on reality. Just like the 2017 rendition of Bloober Team’s psychological horror, Observer: System Redux has you assume the role of private detective, Daniel Lazarski (played by the late Rutger Hauer), working for a special police unit in Krakow as he attempts to uncover the murder of his son, Adam, and several other residents of a connected lower-class tenement building. Four years on and Bloober Team have capitalized on the release of next generation consoles in an attempt to rework Observer and right the (minor) wrongs of its previous edition. Layers Of Fear was an impressive shift into the world of horror gaming but it was undoubtedly 2017’s Observer that laid the foundation for Bloober Team’s unusual psychological horror focus.Īt initial release, Observer was considered Bloober’s Team’s strongest outing, but it wasn’t without its fair share of issues and criticisms with the majority of these being aimed at Observer’s stealth segments and focus on style over substance. This was no simple feat for an indie developer that, before Layers Of Fear, mainly dedicated their focus to action, strategy and puzzle games. After garnering strong positive reception from fans and critics, 2016’s Layers Of Fear confidently placed Bloober Team among the shortlist of upcoming indie developers to keep a close, creepy eye on. Poland’s Bloober Team are making quite a name for themselves among horror gaming obsessives as of late. When Richard was ten, a drunk driver ran over and killed his fifteen-year-old eldest brother, James.Īfter World War II, Speck, who’d barely had the time to learn to read or write, but was as enterprising as he was unyielding, set up his own construction company. By the time the youngest boy, Richard, came into the world in the summer of 1931, the Great Depression had hit rural American families like a wrecking ball. Six children were born to them: four boys, James, Jerry, Joe, and Richard and two girls, Mary and Shirley. The newlyweds also got a hard, unforgiving start to their lives together. He worked as a carpenter he had left school in second grade to help keep money coming into the family. Young Speck wed nineteen-year-old Laura Nancy Nobliott the same year, and they set up home in Seymour. Speck’s father didn’t see sixty, dead of a gallbladder attack in 1924. The southern Indiana land was tough to work, back- and soul-breaking. Among their brood was a son born November 4, 1903, and named Harry Perry, “Speck” to all who got to know him this was John Mellencamp’s grandfather. With his wife, Carrie, the next Johan Mollenkamp had ten children and to each they gave a more Americanized surname: Mellencamp. Together they built up a farmstead outside of Seymour which passed to their eldest son, born to them in 1855 and also named Johan. Johan couldn’t speak English, Anna knew not a word of German, but somehow they managed. Yet Johan Mollenkamp married outside of this tight community, taking for his bride a Native American girl, Anna. Statewide, they quickly established German-language newspapers, German schools, and German social clubs. Germans soon made up more than half the foreign-born population of Indiana. Around this time, Johan Herman Friedrich Mollenkamp left his hometown of Anger, a suburb of Hanover, and pitched up in the rural south of Indiana, meaning to farm the land. From the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, they arrived from southern and eastern Europe, but mostly from Germany. From the north, they trekked downcountry from New England, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Pioneers ranged up south to north, from Kentucky and the Appalachians, across the Ohio River. It was an 1800 Land Act from the government in Washington that created Indiana Territory, and from the middle of that century, the new state began to be widely populated. But her doting grandmother (a touching Rita Tushingham) fears for her: she can see and feel emotions others cannot, a kind of strong psychic link to her environment. Likewise to her mother, Ellie, who worships the styles and music of the 1960s, decides to relocate to London for fashion school. Now Ellie sees her visage in every mirror. Her mother moved to London only to die by suicide. But a ghost haunts her: Ellie’s mother had similar desires of working as a designer. For the first time in a long time, this Pogues gig isn't a celebration of what they were, but a triumph of what they still are.Eloise “Ellie” Turner ( Thomasin McKenzie), the wide-eyed protagonist at the heart of director Edgar Wright’s stylish yet thematically inert horror/comedy "Last Night in Soho," has big dreams of becoming a fashion designer. With spirited Irish singer Camille O'Sullivan in for the late Kirsty MacColl and snowflakes falling on stage, MacGowan sings the famous track as well as the day it was recorded. However, there's riotous celebration in drinking anthems Sally MacLennane and The Boys from the County Hell, and romance in A Pair of Brown Eyes and Dirty Old Town, Ewan MacColl's bleak celebration of Salford's factories, one of many massed singalongs.Ĭhevron's Thousands Are Sailing makes a lovely tribute before MacGowan's astonishing early creative seam throws up an arms-aloft A Rainy Night in Soho and Christmas anthem Fairytale of New York. In their heyday, these songs transformed the British view of Irish people and culture from tabloid/IRA-fuelled suspicion to something attractive and romantic, but decades on, his lyrics still have a refreshed relevance.Īnd the Band Played Waltzing Matilda – the band's cover of Eric Bogle's Gallipoli-inspired rage against the military – is humbling in its brilliance. Hearing the words clearly again is revelatory as MacGowan uses poetry and language that has since vanished from pop's vocabulary – "Now you'll sing a song of liberty for blacks and paks and jocks" – to speak up for the underclass, the immigrants, the prostituted and the poor. However, the musicians – who have long since swapped streams of whiskey for glasses of orange juice – sound pure and strong, dipping deeply into Irish folk and British punk. Performing 1985's masterpiece Rum, Sodomy & the Lash, the band are missing bassist Cait O'Riordan and recently deceased Philip Chevron from the lineup that made that album (and reunited for arena shows nine years ago). The audience greet the unexpected Christmas present of MacGowan's old singing voice with a mass chant of "There's only one Shane MacGowan." However, as the music starts, he stands up straight and sings with much of the inimitable style and power he brought to the Pogues' greatest records some 30 years ago, before alcohol and LSD hampered his creative tap and brought about his temporary sacking. Tonight, Shane MacGowan tiptoes gingerly on stage, flouts the smoking ban and sips from a glass that doesn't contain the optimistically provided water. A t modern Pogues gigs, there's a ritual moment of nervousness and expectancy as audiences check the condition of the band's frontman. Those with current CrashPlan for Home subscriptions will, the company has confirmed, be allowed to use the service for the duration plus an extra 60 day grace period. We worked hard to find the best possible alternatives for CrashPlan for Home customers as we transition out of the consumer market.' This continues to fuel our high growth and is driving our strategic decision to focus solely on business and education markets. ' With the rise in threats facing organisations today, we are uniquely positioned to deliver the data security and visibility solutions those organisations require. ' The needs of our business and consumer customers have diverged dramatically in the past few years,' claims Joe Payne, who took over as president and chief executive of Code42 in 2015. Sadly, that offer appears to have proven unsustainable for the company: A decade after launch, CrashPlan for Home is now being deprecated. The software's simplicity and functionality - including a neat feature through which users can offer a chunk of hard drive space to their friends for completely free remote backups, the contents of which are fully encrypted and private - resulted in widespread adoption, aided in no small part by cloud storage subscription pricing offering unlimited capacity for just $60 a year (around £47 excluding taxes). The company soon found success with its 'freemium' model, offering the cross-platform Java-based software free of charge to home users and asking for payment only if said users wanted to store their backups on Code42's remote servers. Code42, the company behind popular cloud backup platform CrashPlan, has announced it is pivoting away from home users to focus on small business and enterprise customers - and that if current subscribers don't double their payments, their backups will be deleted.įounded in 2001 by Matthew Dornquast, Brian Bispala, and Mitch Coopet as an IT consultancy which would eventually attempt to replicate the success of Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook, Code42 switched tacks in 2007 to launch the CrashPlan backup service. Advance heuristic Īvira products contain heuristics that proactively uncover unknown malware, before a special virus signature to combat the damaging element has been created and before a virus guard update has been sent. Its file-by-file scanning feature has jokingly been titled "Luke Filewalker" by the developers, as a reference to the Star Wars media franchise character " Luke Skywalker". Nowadays there are 32 smaller definition files that are updated regularly in order to avoid peaks in the download of the updates. Avira responded by reducing the size of the individual update files, delivering less data in each update. Juice WRLD’s entire fanbase and celebrities who were friends with the rapper mourned his loss on social media, but instead of agonizing with the tragic news, we should be grateful for his music and talent he shared with the world. More and more artists are taken away from us every year, and they seem to get younger and younger. One of the most influential artists that I have looked up to and praised is now gone, and I’m still in disbelief on how unexpected this was. ONE OF THE BEST BDAYS ND IT STILL AINT OVER 2 and was flying to his home state to celebrate but died only six days after turning 21. What was really quite heartbreaking was the rapper had just celebrated his birthday on Dec. But I believe this seizure was an avoidable catastrophic event had it not been for the excessive drug usage he openly talked about in past interviews and most of his songs. 9 and are waiting for the t oxicology, cardiac pathology and neuropathology tests results before they release an official cause of death. I remember watching for an hour with amazement as freestyled without stopping. His rise to the mainstream from when he was getting noticed on Soundcloud has been a marvelous journey to see, finally getting the recognition he deserved. His music style has even influenced my sound and preference in music profoundly. Although some critics may not be fond of the messages in his songs, those are very relatable topics among young teenagers today.Īs a teenager who enjoys making music as a hobby, I was instantaneously attracted to his music with his more melodic approach to hip-hop. The subject matter of Juice WRLD’s music was heavily based on his experiences as he talks about relationships and even drug usage. Juice WRLD (born Jarad Anthony Higgins), came into the spotlight in the summer of 2018 with his breakout hit “Lucid Dream” which skyrocketed to top the charts and garnered millions of plays. As someone who enjoys listening to many sub-genres of hip-hop, many of these rappers mentioned paved the way for a new and unique sound in hip-hop that intrigued a new audience, especially within our generation. This was followed by Nipsey Hussle’s murder in March 2019. Then in 2018, rappers XXXTentacion (gun violence) and Mac Miller (accidental drug overdose) lost their lives. In 2017 Lil Peep died two weeks after his 21st birthday due to an accidental drug overdose. With so many young talented rappers dying in the past couple of years, it was a huge loss for the hip-hop community to see another talented artist taken away from us at such a young age. One day after his death, TMZ also reported that authorities found 70lbs of marijuana on his private jet and was told the artist popped a handful of Percocet pills in an effort to hide them from FBI agents who were reportedly waiting for his plane to land upon hearing he and his entourage had firearms and drugs on board. Ten minutes into my morning and I was already overwhelmed with grief and disbelief.Īccording to TMZ, Juice WRLD suffered a seizure after landing at Chicago’s Midway airport and was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. I thought it was a joke at first, but with further digging on social media and on the internet, I came to realize that one of my favorite artists has passed away due to a seizure. on a Sunday morning when I woke up to a notification on my phone announcing the tragic passing away of one of the music industry’s most beloved and talented hip-hop artists of this year – Juice WRLD. Sabermetricians argue that a college baseball player's chance of MLB success is much higher than the more traditional high school draft pick. Moneyball also touches on the A's' methods of prospect selection. The Oakland Athletics had the third-lowest team payroll in the league (about $40 million) marginally higher than that of the Montreal Expos, whose franchise was transferred to the Washington Nationals in 2005. Team salaries ranged from about $35 million (the Tampa Bay Devil Rays) to about $120 million (the New York Yankees) upstart proponents of sabermetrics), the democratization of information causing a flattening of hierarchies, and "the ruthless drive for efficiency that capitalism demands".ĭistribution of team salaries in 2002. outsiders (established traditionalists vs. Lewis explored several themes in the book, such as insiders vs. The approach brought the A's to the playoffs in 20. Because of its smaller budget, Oakland had to find players undervalued by the market, and their system has proven itself thus far. These observations often flew in the face of conventional baseball wisdom and the beliefs of many baseball scouts and executives.īy re-evaluating their strategy in this way, the 2002 Athletics, with approximately $44 million in salary, were competitive with larger market teams such as the New York Yankees, who spent over $125 million in payroll that season. Rigorous statistical analysis had demonstrated that on-base percentage and slugging percentage are better indicators of offensive success, and the A's became convinced that these qualities were cheaper to obtain on the open market than more historically valued qualities such as running speed and defense. The book argues that the Oakland A's' front office took advantage of more analytical gauges of player performance to field a team that could outsmart and better compete against richer competitors in Major League Baseball (MLB). Scouts are experienced in the sport, usually having been players or coaches. Before sabermetrics was introduced to baseball, teams were dependent on the skills of their scouts to find and evaluate players. Statistics such as stolen bases, runs batted in, and batting average, typically used to gauge players, are relics of a 19th-century view of the game and the statistics available at that time. The central premise of Moneyball is that the collective wisdom of baseball insiders (including players, managers, coaches, scouts, and the front office) over the past century is outdated, subjective, and often flawed. A film based on Lewis' book, starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, was released in 2011. Its focus is the team's analytical, evidence-based, sabermetric approach to assembling a competitive baseball team despite Oakland's small budget. Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game is a book by Michael Lewis, published in 2003, about the Oakland Athletics baseball team and its general manager Billy Beane. |
